Safeguarding Your Carpets and Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery are particularly vulnerable to dust, dirt, debris and stains during renovation. These soft furnishings are dust magnets, trapping particles that can be difficult to remove, even with rigorous vacuuming.

Cover Everything

This is the most fundamental step to protect your carpets and upholstered furniture. Heavy-duty plastic sheets or canvas drop cloths are indispensable. These materials provide a robust barrier against dust and spills. Secure them meticulously with painter’s tape, ensuring that no gaps remain for dust to infiltrate. For high-traffic areas, consider self-adhesive carpet protection film. This practical solution shields carpets from foot traffic and debris.

Remove Your Furnishings

Moving furniture and rugs out of the work area is the ideal solution when possible. If relocation is not an option, wrap each piece thoroughly in plastic sheeting or old sheets, paying particular attention to corners and crevices.

Maintaining Dust-Free Environment

Even with protective measures, a daily vacuum with a HEPA filter is essential. This proactive approach prevents dust from settling deep into carpet fibres, minimising the risk of stubborn stains.

Post-Renovation Cleaning

Once the renovations are complete, a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service is invaluable. At Cleaner Cleaner, we employ advanced cleaning techniques to remove lingering dust and stains, restoring your soft furnishings to their pristine condition.

Ways to Protect Your Floors

Floors bear the brunt of renovation activity and are at risk of scratches, scuff marks, and paint spills. Ensuring their protection is paramount to preserving the integrity of your home.

Place Material Barriers

Utilise robust floor protection materials such as ram board or cardboard sheets. These materials create a physical barrier, shielding your floors from debris and heavy foot traffic. Some handymen prefer using sticky mats, however we recommend against them as they can leave adhesive residue that is hard to remove.

Strategic Runners

Lay down heavy-duty paper or fabric runners along pathways to prevent dirt from spreading throughout the house. This simple measure will significantly reduce the amount of cleaning required post-renovation.

Preventing Dirt at the Door

Place mats at all entry points to minimise the amount of dust and dirt tracked into your home. This simple measure can make a huge difference in maintaining cleanliness.

Consistent Cleaning

Regular sweeping and mopping are essential. Aim to clean daily, paying particular attention to corners and crevices where fine dust accumulates.

Maintaining Dust-Free Walls and Ceilings

Protecting walls and ceilings during renovations, though often overlooked, is crucial as they are very susceptible to dust accumulation, which can leave a persistent, difficult-to-remove layer. Therefore, covering walls with plastic sheeting, meticulously secured with tape, is essential to prevent dust from adhering to painted surfaces. Corner guards are equally important to shield edges from chipping and damage caused by moving materials and furniture. Another thing you can do for your walls is to wipe them often with a damp cloth. This proactive measure prevents dust buildup, ultimately simplifying the post-renovation cleaning process and ensuring a pristine finish.

Plastic blinds also trap dust, so don’t forget to remove them before the renovation. Image by freepik

Preserving Windows and Glass Surfaces

Glass surfaces, including windows, are prone to scratches and paint splatters, requiring careful protection. Cover windows, glass tables, and other glass surfaces with plastic film to shield them from dust and accidental scratches. Use painter’s tape around window edges to prevent paint drips from damaging window frames. Another good idea is to remove curtains and blinds, which trap dust. Store these fabric items in a clean, sealed area until the renovation is complete.

Safeguarding Doors and Cabinets

Doors and cabinets are frequently overlooked during renovations but are vulnerable to scratches, chips, and paint splatters. Provide a protective barrier by wrapping them in plastic or drop cloths. Remove handles and knobs to prevent them from breaking when moving furniture around but also helps prevent dust accumulation and unwanted paint overspray. Also, keep the cabinet doors closed to stop dirt and dust from settling inside. These precautions will help you prevent accidental damage to your wooden furnishings throughout the renovation process.

Use plastic sheets to contain dust and debris to the areas where construction work is happening.

Minimising Dust and Debris Spread

Construction dust spreads rapidly throughout a home, transforming what begins as a confined mess into a widespread cleaning challenge. To combat this, construct dust barriers using plastic sheeting and zippered openings, effectively containing dust within the work area. Additionally, you can cover air vents with plastic wrap and tape to prevent dust from circulating through the home’s ventilation. If your home has a central heating or air circulation system, it’s best to turn it off during the renovation to avoid spreading dust. Finally, an air purifier can filter fine dust particles, significantly improving the air quality during renovations.

Protecting Fixtures and Appliances

Renovation dust and debris can settle within light fixtures and appliances, potentially leading to long-term damage. To mitigate this risk, cover light fixtures and fans to prevent dust ingress, thereby maintaining optimal performance. For kitchen appliances, the best approach is to wrap them in plastic or, if feasible, remove them from the work area entirely, ensuring they remain protected throughout the renovation process.

Shielding Electrical Outlets and Switches

Fine dust can also infiltrate electrical outlets and switches, creating potential safety hazards. Therefore, covering outlets and switches with painter’s tape is crucial to prevent dust accumulation. Furthermore, turning off power in the work areas minimises the risk of accidental damage or electrical hazards during the renovation.

Upholstery Cleaning in London

Deep upholstery cleaning removes the dirt and dust trapped in your furnishings during the renovation and improves the air quality in your home.

Post-Renovation Deep Cleaning

Even with meticulous precautions, some dust, dirt, and leftover materials are inevitable during renovations, making a comprehensive post-renovation deep clean essential. To ensure a thorough cleanup, follow these steps:

  • Take care of after-builders debris: There will be a lot of materials to throw away. Remove any remaining debris, furniture covers, runners, and protective mats, including any leftover construction, painting, and decorating materials.
  • Thorough floor cleaning: Even if you have vacuumed daily, you will be surprised how much dust is left under all the covers. Vacuum and mop all floors to eliminate residual dust and debris.
  • Dust from top to bottom: Wipe down all surfaces, including walls, countertops, and furniture, to remove any fine dust particles.
  • Hire professional cleaners: Schedule a professional cleaning service for carpets, upholstery, and hard-to-reach areas.

These final steps will help you clean your home after the renovation so you can enjoy the results.

Our experienced cleaners have put together the ultimate Christmas cleaning list, providing a streamlined approach that will leave your home feeling festive and welcoming without breaking your back. We’ll also share some time and energy-saving tips to help you manage the cleaning process effectively, allowing you to balance your cleaning tasks with other holiday preparations.

Aim to create a festive and welcoming atmosphere not a museum-like tidiness.

Primary Goals of Christmas Cleaning

The holiday is causing stress for a surprising number of people, especially parents, so the last thing you need is to stress over cleaning, too. The key to an efficient Christmas cleaning is to make your home feel warm and cosy rather than achieving sterile perfection. Here are a few easy and stress-free ways to approach your home’s holiday makeover:

  • Cosy Over Sterile: Think festive decorations, soft throws, and plump pillows. Add some scented candles to create a magical ambience.
  • Minimal Effort, Maximum Impact: Aim for a quick clean that makes a big difference.
  • Welcoming Atmosphere: Create an inviting space for you and your guests. Light a fire in the fireplace (if you have one), put on some festive music, and set out some holiday treats.

Christmas cleaning should not take up all your well-deserved time off.

Christmas Cleaning Chores for Your Own Comfort

Suppose you haven’t planned to host and simply want to achieve a pleasant, cosy home atmosphere for your comfort. In that case, your Christmas cleaning list will include these key areas, all of which are manageable and won’t overwhelm you:

Kitchen To-dos

Even if you don’t plan on cooking big festive meals for a dozen people, during the holiday, you are more likely to spend some time preparing your favourite snacks, so the goal for the kitchen is to sanitise food preparation areas and make cooking more easy and enjoyable:

  • Declutter: Put away any gadgets and dishes you won’t be using.
  • Pantry Audit: Toss expired goods. Check for any mysterious jars of dried food – are they still edible? Give your spices a sniff test – they lose their aroma over time.
  • Restock Essentials: Make sure you have plenty of baking supplies on hand.
  • Clear Counters: Free up counter space for easy meal prep.
  • Sanitise Food Preparation Areas: Wipe down sinks and countertops with a disinfectant.
  • Quick Oven Cleanup: Here’s a time-cutting oven cleaning hack to try: place a bowl of hot water with a couple tablespoons of dish soap inside. Run the oven at its highest temperature for 15 minutes. The vapours will help loosen grime, making it faster and easier to clean the inside of the appliance.
  • Fridge Refresh: Leave the deep cleaning of the fridge for after the holidays. Instead, wipe down shelves and toss any expired food. Ensure there’s ample space for groceries and holiday leftovers.

Living Room

This is the room you will likely spend the most time in, so your Christmas cleaning goal for this area is to make it cosy:

  • Tidy Up and Dust: Quick dusting with a duster or microfiber cloth will suffice. We’re not aiming for museum-level cleanliness here.
  • Tidy Up: Put away any clutter.
  • Vacuum: Give the sofa, cushions, carpets, and rugs a thorough vacuuming.
  • Quick Mop: A quick mop of the floor will freshen things up.

Fold and put away clothes and blankets for a relaxed bedroom look.

Bedrooms

You deserve a nice rest during your holiday. Here’s what to do to create a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom:

  • Tidy Up: Put away all dirty laundry in the hamper and neatly fold any clothes lying around.
  • Change Bed Linens: A fresh set of sheets will give you a holiday feel.
  • Dusting: Nobody has time to dust their bedroom daily; however, the dust piles up. A swift dusting of surfaces with a duster or microfiber cloth will make the room feel more relaxed.
  • Vacuum: Vacuum the carpet and floor to remove dirt and hair.
  • Quick Mop: Mopping the floors will help you get rid of the last particles of dust and help refresh the air in the room.

Bathroom

We are sure you won’t want to deal with the bathroom on Christmas (we don’t), but you will surely enjoy it if it’s clean and smells fresh. Here’s how to achieve this:

  • Quick Wipe: Give the tiles a quick wipe with a strong bathroom cleaner after showering – the steam from hot water loosens the buildups, so this is the best time to clean the bathroom.
  • Sanitise: Apply a generous amount of bathroom cleaner on the sink and toilet bowl and let it sit like this for 10 minutes. After that, scrub and rinse the porcelain surfaces for quick sanitisation.
  • A Shiny Touch: Polish the mirrors and faucets for an instant uplift.
  • Fresh Towels: Replace old towels with clean ones.
  • Refresh the Bin: Throw away the old bin bag, scrub the container with soapy water and put in a new liner. This chore takes less than 5 minutes, but it has a massive impact on the freshness of the bathroom.

Our Christmas cleaning tips will help prepare the house even if you have family and friends staying over for the holidays.

Christmas Cleaning List When You’re Having Guests

If you’re hosting a Christmas party and have invited guests, especially if they will spend a few nights at yours, pay extra attention to these areas to make their visit more enjoyable for you and them both:

Guest Bathrooms

In most cases, these smaller bathrooms are not used very often, so they can benefit from a quick refresh:

  • Sanitise: A quick scrub of the toilet and the bathroom sink can make the area look and feel very clean and inviting.
  • Stock Essentials: Provide soap, toilet paper, and fresh towels.
  • Freshener: A spritz of air freshener can make a big difference.
  • Empty Bins: Ensure trash cans are empty and leave spare bin liners at a place that is easy to find.

Guest Bedrooms

Most of us rarely use the spare bedrooms for their designated purpose; instead, they turn into storage spaces that stay closed 99% of the time. It’s not unusual for the room to accumulate dust or to start stale, and your efforts should be aimed at these two main issues:

  • Declutter: If you use the room for storage, tidy up a bit and put all the bulky items in one place – under the bed, over the wardrobe, even next to the wall works – the goal is to prevent things from getting in the way and making the space more accessible.
  • Ventilation: Open windows to air out the room.
  • Dusting: Dust all surfaces.
  • Vacuum & Mop: Vacuum the carpets and quickly mop the floors.
  • Fresh Linens: Make the beds with clean sheets, blankets, and pillows.

Guest Beds (If You Don’t Have a Guest Bedroom)

You may have a pull-out bed or a folding sofa if you don’t have a designated guest room. These beds tend to sit unused for a long time, accumulating dust and sometimes trapping unpleasant odours. Here’s how to prepare them for your visitors:

  • Clean & Aerate: If you have a pull-out or folding bed, assemble it, vacuum it thoroughly, and leave it open to air out.
  • Prepare Linens: Prepare fresh linens and blankets. If you plan on using the area during the day, you can put all the bed linens in a basket so they don’t lie around the room and give it a messy look.

Keep your Christmas cleaning routine simple for a stress-free holiday.

What NOT to Clean Before Christmas

You might be tempted to deep-clean the entire house before the holidays, but it’s crucial to prioritise and let go of some tasks if you’re short on time. Here’s what you can skip without feeling guilty:

Rugs & Carpets

Deep carpet cleaning is best left for after the holiday festivities. The increased foot traffic and potential spills during Christmas can quickly dirty your carpets again. Thorough vacuuming is sufficient for now. Also, with the colder and often more humid weather, there might not be enough time for carpets to dry if you opt for professional cleaning.

Sofa and Soft Furniture

Deep cleaning your sofa and other upholstered furniture can wait unless you’re dealing with a significant issue like a huge grease spill on the upholstery. Thorough vacuuming, including the cushions and underneath, is enough for now. You can always use throws or blankets to disguise any minor imperfections.

Deep cleaning of windows, carpets, and furniture can wait this Christmas.

Windows

While clean windows brighten a room, thorough window cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming endeavour. With shorter days and everyone gathered indoors, the impact of sparkling windows might be minimal. If you have any particularly unsightly smudges or fingerprints, a quick wipe-down with a microfiber cloth and window cleaner should suffice.

Focusing on these high-impact cleanups and skipping deep cleaning tasks can significantly reduce your cleaning workload and allow you to enjoy a more relaxed holiday season. We hope these tips help you have a stress-free and enjoyable Christmas!

You deserve to enjoy the holiday in a cosy and warm environment – and this shoukld be your main goal.

Enjoy Your Christmas

Remember, the holiday is about spending time with loved ones, not achieving a spotless home. Let go of the pressure to do a deep clean and focus on creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Expert Summer Cleaning Tips for a Fresh and Healthy Home https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/blog/expert-summer-cleaning-tips-for-a-fresh-and-healthy-home/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 12:38:09 +0000 https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/?p=184200 Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and a renewed desire to spend time outside. However, high temperatures, humidity, and increased outdoor activity also present unique challenges for keeping your home clean and healthy. Here at Cleaner Cleaner, we understand these challenges and are here to share some expert cleaning tips to ensure your home remains your fresh summer oasis.

Plastic blinds are notorious dust collectors, but regular wiping can significantly reduce the amount of dust circulating in your home. Image by freepik

Combating Summer Dust and Dirt

Warmer weather means open windows, inviting dust and other airborne particles indoors. Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter is essential, targeting high-traffic areas, carpets, rugs, and furniture edges. Curtains and blinds are dust magnets, so it’s a good idea to include them in your regular cleaning schedule. Use your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachment to remove dust from curtains and the small nozzle to clean blinds, regardless of whether they are textile, plastic, or wooden. If you have an air conditioner, regularly clean its filter to prevent airflow obstruction and potential damage to the unit.

If you (and your pet) enjoy outdoor activities in summer, our tips will help prevent tracking dirt and grime onto your carpets and furniture.

Dealing with Dirt from Outdoor Adventures

Even if you don’t have a mudroom, it is wise to designate a space near your home’s entrance where you remove dirty clothes and shoes to contain mud and dirt. Use washable doormats for pets and wipe down your shoes after outdoor adventures. Keep a towel by the door to clean muddy paws before your pets enter the house. Vacuuming regularly during the summer is essential to prevent dirt buildup and keep indoor air quality healthy. If dirt gets tracked inside, consider deep cleaning your carpets to avoid damage to the fibres and lengthen the lifespan of your floors.

Sweat stains can quickly ruin your bedding, so following our laundry and mattress cleaning tips is essential.

Managing Summer Sweat and Odours

Increase ventilation, wash bedding frequently, and consider using mattress refreshing sprays. Summertime increases sweat and sebum buildup on bedding. Unless you have a thermoregulating mattress pad, you should wash your sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers in hot water (at least 55°C or 130°F) weekly to eliminate sweat and prevent bacteria growth. If your mattress is double-sided, flip it to the summer side for cooler sleep and less sweating. Consider professional mattress cleaning for the winter side to tackle stains, odours, allergens, and dust mites.

Increased sweating can also become an issue for the upholstery too. To prevent your sofa from looking shabby and worn out, consider using a throw cover during the hottest months – the sebum and sweat will remain on the washable covers instead of the furniture fabrics.

Keeping Summer Pests at Bay

During the summer, as we become more active, so do insects. Seal up your home’s entry points, install window screens, and use repellents to deter insects. Research targeted solutions for specific pest issues to prevent infestations. Regular deep cleaning of carpets, upholstery, and mattresses helps eliminate hiding spots for pests and their eggs. Professional deep cleaning removes deeply embedded dirt, preventing bacteria buildup that attracts pests. The hot water extraction carpet and furniture cleaning procedures effectively kill dust mites and allergens.

Summer Shedding and Furry Friends

Regularly brush your pets as shedding increases in summer. Keep a lint roller at hand for quick furniture touch-ups. For stubborn fur, use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Deep carpet cleaning effectively removes embedded fur from heavily fur-laden carpets. Also, you can check some of our professional tips on dealing with pet hair on upholstery and carpets.

Disinfect your bathroom with bleach while wearing gloves to protect your hands and prevent the spread of mould spores throughout your home.

Combating Mould and Mildew

Summer brings up humidity levels, which increases the risk of mould growth. Maintain low humidity levels and ensure good ventilation to prevent your home from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Ideally, the humidity levels in your home should be around 30- 50%. Use dehumidifiers in damp areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Run bathroom fans during showers and leave doors open when you don’t use the area to allow proper airflow.

Read also: 7 Ways to Deal with Mould at Home

To sanitise the bathroom, clean the surfaces like mirrors, tiles, and cabinets with vinegar and water. If you suspect there’s already mould growth, opt for the heavy artillery and get a bathroom cleaner containing bleach or bleach and water solution. Use silica gel packets or chalk in wardrobes to absorb moisture. Avoid leaving spills unattended, and fix any leaks, as even small amounts of standing water can result in mould growth.

When you book a professional cleaning in summer you can enjoy stain-free, sanitised carpets and upholstery, ready to use the same day!

Carpet and Furniture Cleaning is a Summer Essential

Summer is the perfect time to clean your carpets, furniture, and mattresses thoroughly. The warmer temperatures and improved ventilation help speed up the drying process. Another advantage of summer is that you can leave removable upholstery and furniture covers, as well as small area rugs, to dry outside in the sun. UV rays effectively kill bacteria and mould spores and help sanitise the fabrics. Essentially, deep cleaning furnishings in summer is an investment in your winter comfort.

How Often Should You Clean Your Fridge? https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/blog/how-often-clean-fridge/ https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/blog/how-often-clean-fridge/#respond Sat, 25 Sep 2021 15:40:32 +0000 https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/?p=26494

A cleaner fridge is not only a pleasant sight, but also helps improve the overall hygiene in your home.

There are some household chores that many of us are guilty of ignoring, especially in areas that are out of sight of visitors. As you want to maintain a clean home, you may prioritise vacuuming, mopping, and sanitising surfaces. Yet, you might be surprised to learn that germs can accumulate in places you might not expect, which can affect the air quality, odour, and health of your household. For example, a lot of people often forget to clean the fridge. If you are guilty of neglecting this chore, it is time to make things right, as the appliance can turn into heaven for germs and develop an unpleasant smell. Keep reading to find out why and how often you should clean your fridge.

Why Do You Need to Clean Your Fridge Regularly

At Cleaner Cleaner, we have been helping our customers enjoy sparkling clean homes for 14 years due to our professional cleaning services. When we ask how often people clean their fridges, most people will answer never. Yet, little do they know that they are adding germs into their fridge each time they buy food and place it inside the appliance. Keep in mind that when you buy any food from the supermarket, you’re not the only person handling it. Each item has passed through the hands of other customers touching the products, staff stacking the items on shelves, and warehouse employees packing the goods. This means that these products have a considerable amount of germs on them. When you put food in a fridge without cleaning the appliance nor the packaging, these microbes can stay in there for a long time. Plus, all bacteria and germs multiply over time and are not affected by low temperatures.

How Often to Clean the Refridgerator?

To remove bacteria and prevent foul odours and mould growth, we recommend cleaning your fridge at least once every three months. The thorough disinfection of the appliance will help protect your property and health, as bacteria and mould can make you sick. Besides wiping the shelves, there are a few more things you can do to keep your fridge clean and germ-free.

Over-stuffing the fridge makes it harder to clean the appliance.

Avoid Overstuffing the Appliance

Although it is tempting to buy some items in bulk (especially at promotional prices), try not to store too many goods in the fridge. Less packed goods in the appliance will help minimise the bacteria inside. Also, fruits and veggies often have a short shelf-life, which is why you should use them within a few days of purchase. When storing less fresh produce, you will prevent it from rotting away. This also helps the fruits and veggies maintain their health benefits. If you don’t use fresh produce within a few days of purchase, the nutritional value drops to zero.

Keep Your Fridge Drain Clear

Every refrigerator features a drain, which must be free from obstruction at all times. It helps remove the condensed water and support evaporation. However, if the drain gets blocked, this leads to higher condensation inside the fridge, pooling of liquids, and increased bacteria and mould. For this reason and to ensure you and your household or office stays healthy, you must remove blockages and keep the drain free from any obstruction.

Deal With Bad Smells in a Safe Way

Fridges can develop unpleasant smells over time due to a build-up of dirt and germs. Regular cleaning of the refrigerator will minimise the unpleasant odours. Adding an air fridge freshener like Croc’Odor, for example, also draws nasty smells away. It will not affect your food’s safety, freshness, or taste, and it features a temperature indicator to protect it. Suppose you are a fan of simpler solutions – you can put a bowl with baking soda inside the appliance as it has strong deodorising qualities. If you are going away on holiday or your rental property is untenanted for a while, etc., you might want to save by turning your fridge off. In this case, it is good to make sure the door is left ajar because this can also lead to foul odours and mould growth.

The silver lining with the coronavirus https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/blog/the-silver-lining-with-the-coronavirus/ https://cleanercleaner.co.uk/blog/the-silver-lining-with-the-coronavirus/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2020 12:33:41 +0000 https://staging.cleanercleaner.co.uk/?p=15026 It’s certainly not nice to hear about the rising number of people affected by the coronavirus around the globe, however every negative event has its silver lining. I reckon that the whole coronavirus outbreak will benefit towards raising the hygiene standards across the average UK household. Hopefully these high standards will remain as high long after the coronavirus pandemic.

Simple hygiene rules:

1.         Wash hands regularly throughout the day

2.         Wash clothes once a week

3.         Wash bed linen once a week

4.         Air your property morning and evening to let fresh air

5.         Deep clean and then wipe inanimate surfaces: door handles, worktops, tv remotes, mobile phone with antibacterial wipes

6.          Steam clean carpets , curtains and soft furnishings

There are number of chemicals may be able to destroy the Coronavirus, however, the efficacy tests are done in controlled, clinical environments meaning that the real world application may not achieve the same results.

It is important to understand that most antimicrobial chemicals (disinfectants) are not going to achieve the desired results when applied to soiled surfaces, carpets, rugs, soft furnishings, curtains, inanimate surfaces etc.

As experienced cleaning professionals, we advise proper cleaning of surfaces, like washing of hands, which offers more protection than application of hand sanitiser as it actually removes the contamination rather than trying to “kill” or “destroy” it.

Even surfaces that appear visibly clean must be cleaned thoroughly prior to application of disinfectants.

Keep your homes and offices clean is our advice to you!

Cleaning Hacks - Cleaner Cleaner
